Escape Brief on Mt Ololokwe –Samburu.

Samburuland is here, Mt Ololokwe whose beauty in a distance you cannot fail to spot as you take the stretch from Archers-post on the highway, its calling for you, and it’s ready for you. (Get your Camera Ready for the once in a lifetime magical views)


But, beauty can be deceiving yeah? Yes it can be, A steep rocky Elephant trail awaits for you at 4am in the morning the next day as you meander through the shrubs filled with elephant poop with your spotlights being your only source of light with a target of being on the first summit by 6am in the morning so as to catchup with the captivating view of the beautiful and mesmerizing morning sun, rising from the Mountains. 


You haven’t seen it all yet, the journey continues up ahead for another 1-2 hours, where you’ll now be heading for the peak, through scattered rocky vegetation’s you’ll come across seasonal streams with pastoralism activities evident from the cow-dungs that fill the trail.  At some point it becomes foggy though not a challenge in visibility, yours focus? The peak.


A flat rocky surface up ahead ushers you the view of the beautiful valley beneath the mountain, leaving you breathless and in awe with a meandering Isiolo – Marsabit highway giving you an amazing Breathtaking View from up above. Your camera comes in handy at this stage, and you just don’t want to miss on this moment, this is just not a hike it’s a moment that creates memories to cherish forever.

DRESS CODE-

  • For long distance travel wear something youre comfortable with
  • For hike – Tights /cargo pants / hiking outfits, or something comfortable you would normally use for workouts but must be warm enough to protect you from morning cold,
  • Comfortable hiking shoes, (Tip, always wear a size bigger or half bigger than what you usually wear to the gym)
  • Hat/cap/ sunglasses for sun protection
  • Warm clothes for change after hiking
  • Hiking poles(optional)

ESCAPE ITINERARY

  • 0630hrs: Meet up at International House front Parking
  • 0700hrs: Departure
  • 1500hrs: Buffalo springs Game drive
  • 1800hrs: arrive at Sabache Camp

PREPPING FOR YOUR HIKE

  • Keep yourself active by walking, running, cycling, swimming or any other suitable cardio exercise at least 7 days before the hike.
  • Check through and confirm your gear at least 2-3 days to hike
  • Increase your water intake 48hrs to the hike day
  • Up your carbs intake 48hrs to hike, this helps to increase energy reserves.
  • If working out/exercising heavy, Go light at least 24-48hrs to hike day to allow yourself recovery and enough rest time.
  • Get enough sleep the night before the hike. 
  • Check the size of your toe nails, if long, you know what to do.
  • Purpose to have your morning meal/ breakfast 2-3hrs before the hike kick-off.
  • Park your luggage before you go to bed to avoid rushed packing in the morning.
  • Make sure your phone is fully charged
  • Pack your personal medication if any in advance especially if your hike is very early in the morning.
