NATURE OF ESCAPE – ISLAND TOUR

DATE:  MARCH 5TH- 8TH

Escape Brief:

Lamu Island lies approximately 150 Miles from port city of Mombasa, off the Kenyan Shore in Indian Ocean.  it’s an island founded in the 12th century, also serving as one of the longest-established and best-preserved remaining settlements of the Swahili tradition in east Africa. And its less than ten miles long and four miles wide.

The island of Lamu is a Swahili settlement filled with culture, whose inhabitants are Predominantly Bajun’s,

The Bajun speak a language they call Tikuu, which is a form of Swahili. Although they are a mixture of Bantu, Somali, and Arabs, they still maintain themselves as a distinct cultural group.

The Bajun evolved when Arab traders began coming to the coast of Kenya to trade and eventually settle. Over the decades, as the Arabs intermarried with the African population, a Muslim community grew. As time passed, the Arabs introduced their social structure to the family-oriented Africans.

The island main mode of transport is by donkey due to small winding paths. Along its southern coastline the area of Lamu island is composed of mainly sand dunes, which cover the Shela aquifer which is responsible for the islands main source of water.

Shela island is now the main centre for tourism on the island, with several guest houses featured. Shela is also home to the most spectacular beaches on Lamu island.. It makes a sharp contrast to Lamu town (directly opposite the airstrip on Manda) which lacks a beach and functions as a relatively busy port.

Important Note on dress code and Extra activities

    • Lamu is a conservative society and revealing cloths may not come in handy during the tour
    • We should try to avoid Bikinis and extremely revealing dress-code. However, if you have a cover-up, it will work well even when you have a short dress or hot pants.
    • Confirm the hand luggage(cabin) weight from your ticket so as not to exceed the allowed weight.
    • If you think you will have a heavier bag, you can purchase an extra luggage. This has to be done in advance prior to your day of travel.

On the third day, we have a full day that we can do other activities (at own cost). This is absolutely voluntary. You can choose to do a full day Manda Toto trip (you’ll be advised on costing) If you are adventurous, you can choose to do tube surfing (we will advise on costing).
